Additional support
At our school, we cater to every student's learning needs. We support students with disability and additional learning needs so they can take part in all areas of school life.
Learning Support Teams address the learning and behaviour needs of students (including health, hygiene, nutrition, mobility, medication and personal equipment issues). The team, working with families and support agencies, advises and makes recommendations to assist in positive outcomes for students. The team may also be involved in risk assessment and risk management of students as an element of the support process.
Support that fits your child's needs
Our students need extra support to feel confident and do their best at school. We work closely with families to make support plans and adjustments that suits each child’s needs.
Additional learning support can include:
- teachers and support staff working together with families (and students, if needed)
- individual learning plans (ILP)
-
providing tailored programs to help high potential and gifted students with their advanced learning needs
-
regular check-ins to review and update the planned supports
-
changes to the classrooms:
- accessible classrooms
- assistive technology
- instructional resources
-
extra guidance, simpler content or different focus during lessons
-
post school information and transition.
Adjustments are planned with parents and carers. They are reviewed regularly and changed when needed. If you think your child may need extra help, contact us.

Post-school options
A focus of Newcastle Senior School is to prepare students with the knowledge, skills and confidence they need to participate effectively in the community. Transition Exiting process involves ensuring parents/carers and students are fully informed of the options available to them post-school.
This is done through discussions and goal setting as part of the ILP process, attending the annual Future Choices Expo, visits by parents/carers and students to a range of post-school service providers and supporting students to spend time at their chosen provider prior to leaving school.
We continue to develop strong links between school and service providers to ensure students and their families are fully prepared and get the best possible start to their post-school life.
Transition support
When students have plans in place for post-school work or placements, Newcastle Senior School may offer support for an initial transition visit.
The opportunity to begin regular visits throughout terms 3 and 4 is available for students, although transport and any support provisions are the responsibility of parents/carers.
Holding conversations with the transition support teacher and NDIS Coordinators are vital to ensure funding supports are available.
