Wellbeing
At our school, student wellbeing and learning go hand in hand. We want every student to feel safe, included and ready to learn. Whether your child needs help with their mental, emotional, social or physical wellbeing, we are here to help them thrive at school and in daily life.
Our students, staff and community are engaged through regular wellbeing activities hosted by our YOU ME US committee.
How we support student wellbeing
Supporting each student’s mental, emotional, social and physical wellbeing is part of everyday school life.
We do this through:
- teachers who help students feel welcome and included
- access to school counsellors, school psychologists and specialist staff
- programs that support health, social skills, attendance and positive behaviour
- help for students who are new or changing year levels
- clear expectations for behaviour and respectful relationships
- staff who get to know each child and work closely with families
- developing health care and behavior plans for students
- open communication about wellbeing and support.

Positive Behaviour for Learning
Newcastle School practices Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL). We use common language and signage across our three sites to maintain a consistent approach to positive behaviour.
Positive discipline is an essential part of Newcastle School’s Student Welfare policy and School Discipline code.
It may be promoted by:
-
Providing an appropriate curriculum to meet the needs of each student
-
The consistent use of good behaviour management techniques such as:
- Regularly noticing and commending students for complying with rules and directions
- Giving simple directions
- Refocusing and redirecting attention when students become restless, inattentive or frustrated
- Having a plan for managing behaviour disruptions e.g., student behaviour support plans
- Following up any significant behaviour problems
-
Staff attendance at relevant training and development programs
-
Staff modelling of consistent, caring and controlled behaviour
-
Discussion with parents and caregivers of their roles and responsibilities in managing student behaviour
-
Individual behaviour support plans, crisis management and risk management plans that are easily understood
-
Liaising with supportive community agencies to build effective learning support teams
-
Focusing on developing communication, social and play skills to alleviate or replace inappropriate behaviours
